My brand new Mac mini should be arriving in less than a week (knock on wood). One initial concern that I had was Apple’s statement on their web site, which states RAM upgrades must be performed by an Apple Service Provider. Bollocks.
MacCentral found out the official word from Apple is that as long as you don’t break it getting it open, you can do it yourself without voiding the warranty.
Fellow blogger, smash, has even posted what looks like an official Apple instructional video clip for taking apart the Mac mini. I love that the only tool needed is a putty knife.

Chances are that either Apple legal will ask him to remove the video, or he will be Slashdotted, so below the break, I have a transcription of the text from the video.
- Turn the computer over so the ports are facing you and the bottom of the computer (gray color) is facing up.
- Hold the putty knife with the beveled edge facing the bottom housing. Insert the tool into the gap where the metal housing and the bottom assembly come together.
- The plastics and aluminum are easily damaged, use caution when inserting the putty knife.
- Gently release the internal latches by prying the tool away from the computer. You will hear little popping sounds as the latches release and the bottom moves away from the top housing.
- Repeat the procedure on the opposite side of the unit.
- Push the I/O panel upward until the top housing is removed. The popping sounds will continue as you push the I/O panel: this is normal. Set the top housing aside.
Cool.
