Thumb ring

So I’m not really what one would refer to as a “sports fanatic.” Still, it is hard to grow up in western Pennsylvania and not develop at least some affection for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That said, it is nice to see the team finally get their fifth Super Bowl victory.

I didn’t watch the game, but did catch the tail end as I waited for Grey’s Anatomy to come on. Considering how those few minutes dragged on, I felt no regret at missing the previous four plus hours. (But what is up with the guy with the crazy hair sticking out the back of his helmet?)

The last Super Bowl I watched from beginning to end was ten years ago. This was also the last time the Steelers made it to the Super Bowl; they lost to Dallas. That was also the year our unit was stationed at Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen, Germany, right before we deployed to Sarajevo. They had rushed to get us over to Germany after the peace accord was signed, so we had to spend Christmas overseas. Then we waited around for a couple of months. We were all disappointed because the normal Super Bowl commercials were preempted by Armed Forces Network commercials and public service announcements.

Anyway, it’s hard to believe “the dummies” finally got their fifth Super Bowl victory. (If you say “the dummies blew it again” in western Pennsylvania, it is a good bet that people will know exactly what you are talking about.)

I remember in elementary school, when quite a few of my classmates wore black and gold t-shirts emblazoned with “One for the thumb in ’81.” I was jealous, of course—back then I only ever got to wear five-year-old hand-me-downs. It’s hard to believe that was twenty-five years ago. Hmmm, “oh-six” doesn’t quite rhyme with “thumb.” On second thought, “eighty-one” didn’t really rhyme either. So what pithy saying will they come up with for number six?
