The cubicle next to mine, which has been vacant for a few months, had a new (albeit temporary) occupant, whom I discovered this morning.
During Reunions weekend, I had swung by my office a couple of times to check e-mail. I had thought I had heard a rustling sound once or twice, but thought nothing of it; same thing during work yesterday.
However, this morning the rustling became a persistent scabbering. Perhaps, I thought, it was the ghost of one of that cubicle’s former occupants, having come back to haunt me. As far as I know, though—Emily, Laura, Fergus, Rob, Matt, Jin, and Kati are still very much in corporeal form.
A quick investigation of the cubicle brought me face to face with the cute little guy in the photo below.
It seems this mouse had fallen into a plastic recycling bin a few days ago, but the sides were too high and slippery for him to make his way out. His vain attempts to gain altitude were funny, but sad considering the length of his imprisonment in the rank, befouled bin.
After a brief coworker “show and tell,” the little guy finally gained his freedom and scampered across the grass.

How cute! During a blizzard once, my brother caught a mouse in the house. Neither of us wanted him to die, so we put him in a trash can with food and water, and set it in the garage for a couple weeks until the snow melted and we let him out in a field as well. I know they’re pesks, but way too cute to harm.
Their cuteness is a great defense mechanism against humans. When he (or she?) looked up at me with those adorable little eyes, I couldn’t resist helping out the little guy—even if he and his friends pooped all over our offices.
Arguable the cutest occupant of that space since Emily (and Nora!) left.
Ah, how could I forget little Nora on my list…
105d has had quite a few occupants. Considering how they stuffed three of you in there at one point, hard to believe it sits vacant now.
Poor little thing, she probably had three little mousies at home waiting for her. I’m glad you released her!
Yup, I’m sure the mouse had quite a story to tell to his/her little ones.
if its tail was cut off, it would actually look like a cute lil’ hamster
I think he’s just as cute as any ol’ hamster, even with the tail.
You know, it is pretty arbitrary which rodents we choose to show our affection to. :-)
Hamster story time!!!
This one time, I was housesitting, and the homeowner was supposed to come home on a Sunday. I assumed she did, and didn’t stop by her house again until Friday. Turns out she had decided to stay at her mother’s an extra week.
She had two hamsters in a cage. The little guys ran out of food in my absence. One of the hamsters brutally killed the other one. I felt really guilty, but never told her the reason one of the hamsters turned homicidal.
